WALK RIGHT IN! The blues booms in tiny clubs and taverns. You can find it in the black neighborhoods of Chicago, the Deep South, Oakland, California, and the no-go-areas like Watts of Los Angeles. Blues is part of the African-American culture and represents the roots of jazz – although presumed dead in the 1990s (after these pictures had been taken). But there’s life in the old dog yet. Today many young artists play the blues – traditional rural styles of Mississippi and Louisiana, or electric big city trends of the East Coast, Mid-West and West Coast. Blues has also fused with jazz, soul, rap and world music. Blues is still a form of protest against racism and oppression of minorities in the United States and the rest of the planet.
